Jared is a shy Panguna man with an eternally, youthful smile. He doesn’t say much when you talk to him, just a few words and then the smile!
But this simple man runs one of the most unique trade stores in all of PNG.
His store, a brown shack up at Panguna is referred to by other Bougainvilleans as the ‘Custom’ store.
What Jared does at this awesome traditional store is sell traditional customary items such as bamboo pipes, woven baskets, ‘Tamatama’ (traditional Bougainville food) making tools, traditional sweet potato carry bags and more.
He buys these items from the locals who make the track to his store to sell their items.
He then keeps them in stock and should other Bougainvilleans be looking for the same items, for example bamboo pipes for their dances, they can catch the PMV up to Panguna and buy these items from Jared’s ‘Custom’ store.
Jared also buys taro from the locals which he also sells.
Jared supplements his income through other ways as well, but his custom store is still so unique, a very traditional/contemporary economic venture which no doubt benefits everyone involved.
I asked Jared why he started the store but he just smiled back at me. The store to him was a simple idea and I guess he was perplexed why I found it so fascinating.
So if you are ever up at Panguna, go see Jared’s Custom store and get traditional! And remember, Jared doesn’t say much, but he is a cool guy with a great smile!
Great Idea! Share your thoughts on this….
